Committee Strategy

To Ensure your party reflects your values, become a local committee person.

We’ve also launched a Committee Strategy Initiative to get voters involved inside their political parties—where the real decisions about candidates are made. By serving at the local committee level, you gain a voice in candidate selection, party policy, and funding decisions that shape your community.

Do you want to make a real difference in the direction of your local, state, and national politics? The most effective way to start is by becoming a Precinct or  Committee Representative —a grassroots leader within your political party.

Committee people are the most basic unit of representation in a political party and in New York state it's estimated at least half of the positions are unfilled. You can be elected or appointed by a party chair to represent your election district or a nearby ED.  Here's why they matter:

1. Grassroots Power --Committee reps are the party's direct link to voters at the most local level. They engage neighbors, build relationships, and serve as the eyes and ears of the party on the ground.

2. Voter Mobilization -- They help register voters, canvass neighborhoods, and turn out the vote—efforts that can swing elections, especially in close races.

3. Influence in Party Decisions -- Committee reps often have voting power within the party, including electing county or state party leadership, helping write platforms, and sometimes even helping to nominate candidates when vacancies occur.

4. Candidate Recruitment and Support -- They identify and recruit strong local candidates, support campaigns, and help organize events. Their endorsement can carry weight in local races.

5. Policy Feedback Loop -- They bring constituent and neighborhood concerns back to party leadership, shaping party priorities and messaging to better reflect community needs.

In short, committee representatives are essential to a party's strength, responsiveness, and ability to win elections from the ground up.  With so many vacancies across NY state, strong, effective mobilization to drive policy change politically is
